Spiced Wild Blueberry Smoothie

Blueberry Smoothie

There is something powerful about the color purple (I guess that's why it's used for royalty), so whenever I make a blueberry smoothie without greens (a rarity), I'm always taken aback by the resulting color. The purple/blue color in blueberries comes from anthocyanin, a flavonoid phytonutrient that only comes from plants. Foods rich in anthocyanin are rich in antioxidants, and have strong anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties.

For this drink, I've chose to use the tiny powerhouse of a berry, wild blueberries. These are even higher in antioxidants than typical blueberries. They are a very good source of vitamins K and C, beta-carotene, and resveratrol. This makes blueberries a great choice for the cardiovascular system, nervous system, and cognitive protection. This low GI fruit is a good choice for adding a hint of sweetness without having too great of an effect on your blood sugar levels.

Research shows that freezing blueberries does not effect their antioxidant levels at all (super exciting!). So, come this summer when they are in abundance, it's a great idea to pick as many as possible and freeze for the winter. Then you can pull these rich, nutritious, brain fueled berries out of the freezer and know that they will still treat your body just as well as when you picked them off the bush.

Enjoy this light, blissful wild blueberry smoothie as an afternoon snack or as an antioxidant rich addition to your breakfast. However you choose to enjoy it, drink slowly and remember that you are royalty.
